Defect Analysis - A Boon!

The aim of this paper is to investigate different approaches adopted to analyze the defects found during the execution of a Software Testing project and attempts to suggest the most credible approach to be used in resolving the weak areas. While exploring strengths and weaknesses of various approaches, the paper also explains why it is necessary to perform an effective defect analysis before heading towards another testing project for achieving satisfactory results.The contents are based on various methodology used in performing defect analysis for a mobile handset testing project, in L&T Infotech. In investigating different approaches, this paper gives technical data and statistics generated during the execution of the project to substantiate investigations. The information presented is targeted to readers who have a basic understanding of testing. The approach can be used by any industry to perform an effective defect analysis.

Almas M. Gandhi is the Test Architecture lead for a system testing project in L&T Infotech Ltd. Drawing on over 6 years of IT experience in the mobile handset domain, she has been associated in the verification and validation of handsets, both offshore and abroad. She now provides technical assistance for developing test design and strategies for mobile feature testing using different approaches. She has contributed continuously in improving test processes at work. Her quest to learn and improve, is her forte.

Having done her B.E in Electronics in 2003 from a reputed college in Mumbai, she has also done a non-credit course in Embedded systems from IIT - Mumbai(Distance learning program - 2004).

Aarti Sharma is working as a software engineer with a leading corporate, L & T Infotech- Mumbai for past 3 years. She has experience in the following domains:

  • Bluetooth - Integration, System and IOT testing on various phones.
  • Test Architecture which includes creating the test suites.

She has completed her B.Tech from Meerut Institute of Engineering and Technology and has also done Post graduate diploma in Embedded systems and VLSI design from CDAC, Noida.
