Calibrate your Estimation Process
Muthu Gopal, Prabu Chelladurai
Prediction is a challenge. Precision in prediction is a greater challenge. Still, predictions in all walks of life target precision and software estimation is no exception. A comprehensive way of driving software estimations towards precision is by improving the process. This paper talks about the 3As of Estimation Process and a quantitative approach named Process Calibration to improve the same. Calibration is based on a framework, which analyzes & improves the estimation process in lines of Performance, Stability, Compliance, & Capability thereby facilitating more accurate estimates in future.

Estimation Methodology for Data Warehousing Projects
Sujatha Sivaraman, Karthikeyan Sankaran

Data warehousing applications differ from the traditional application development in the way that they are predominantly subject oriented rather than process oriented and have an analytic centric focus rather than a transaction centric focus. To evolve a structured estimation method for such an application is especially challenging as the data is pooled from plethora of application sources and they are implemented using myriad of solution domains. The further transformation, source qualification and data cleansing that happens on these data and transgression into a format which supports business analytics adds to further complexity of these estimates.

The user centric approach of this domain lends itself amenable to adopt function points since it is a methodology which is based on logical user oriented terms. A structured estimation model is attempted to be evolved based on size which is measured in function points. The model is tweaked and mapped to the various components of the data warehousing domain whose data model is architected using dimensional model rather than a relational model. Complexity factors other than size and their interrelations have been reckoned in framing a structured estimation model.

Requirements Engineering for Estimation
Saurabh Chandra

In this fast emerging economy, organizations need to continually improve themselves across divisions. In order to do so, they need to be on top of innovation wheel. However, in this world of global competition, organizations simply can’t afford to work forever on innovation of some technology or practices. They need to have specific planned completion date, beforehand, for a project so that the future projects can be kicked off and executed accordingly. In order to keep the ball rolling and survive in this highly competitive market, organizations should be in a strong position to simulate several estimations that is required to execute a specific task.

Keeping that in mind and acknowledging the importance of estimation, the topic to be discussed is related with designing a real time “Effort Estimation Model”. The industry that I will be considering throughout my discussions is software Industry. The domain that the paper will cater to is “Automation Testing Domain”.
