A Probable Structure underlying PMO Functions

  Veerendra K Rai

Associate Consultant and Senior Scientist
  Tata Consultancy Services (TCS)

This paper attempts to identify probable structure underlying myriad PMO functions. The scope of the paper is confined to 27 PMO functions as reported in a white paper prepared for Project Management Institute (PMI) on global analysis of the current state of practice of multi-project PMOs. This white paper is based on a global survey in which 500 PMOs participated. A probable structure has profound implications for project management theory and practice. A technique called Interpretive Structural Modeling (ISM) has been used for this purpose. The paper provides an interpretation of these structures within program management.

Veerendra K Rai has publications in the area of Project & Programme Management and Systems thinking, and has presented papers in a number of national and international conferences. He holds a Ph.D. in Industrial Engineering and Management from Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur, India, and an MS in Computer Science from NJIT USA.
